Our kindergarten classes are off to a great start. We are impressed with how well our students are showing us that they can follow classroom rules and routines with success. They are making friends and working hard each day!
Language Arts
In Language Arts this month, the students are learning about rhyming words and beginning sounds. We have done an overview of the alphabet the past few weeks. We have focused on comparing and contrasting, and on noting important details as we read to develop our comprehension skills.
Math
During math, we have worked on number recognition and formation as well as sorting. You can reinforce these skills by having your child sort objects at home such as laundry, groceries, or money. Ask him or her to tell you the sorting rule they used. Additionally, you can help your child practice recognizing numbers in your phone number and address to reinforce number skills while also helping him or her to memorize this important information. Use the following webpage to practice sorting at home: http://www.glencoe.com/sites/common_assets/mathematics/ebook_assets/vmf/VMF-Interface.html
Under Grade Level select “Kindergarten.” Then choose “attribute blocks” or “attribute buttons” under the heading Manipulatives. Ask your child to drag the shapes on to the mat, and then sort the shapes by color, size, or shape.
Science
Our Science curriculum began with a unit on senses. The children discovered how their five senses help them learn about the world around them. The students learned ways to observe objects by using their five senses: hearing, taste, touch, sight, and smell.
Currently, we are learning about magnets. We learned that magnets are attracted to objects that have iron and steel in them. Scroll down to view photos from this unit!
